Okay so a big question to people starting a website is how do I get found by the search engines. This has been an ongoing conflict for years, because if you let google tell it, they say to submit right through their submit a new website form. But in the next breath they also say that you need at least one link pointing to you in order to get into google. hmmm, this is sort of conflict in interest, is it not. why would you submit if you already have one or more links pointing to you. Any self respecting webmaster know that they will eventually be found if they already have links pointing to them.

Being in SEO for quite a while now I always tell a new client that is just starting a new website NEVER to submit to google, let them find you. But the first question that I am posed with is “wont that take a longer amount of time” my answer to that is NO. The reason I say this is because normally it takes google 3-4 weeks to post a new site into there index after submission and sometimes it even takes longer than that. Now on the other hand if you go out and find a site that is crawled regularly and get on that site then you are sure to be found within a couple of days.

The benefits to this are a lot greater. While submission to the search engines is wasting of your time, submission to directories are not. You will benefit from submitting your site in Directories, not only because search engines will find the link there and index your site, but it will also increase popularity of your site. Search engines consider each link who is pointing to your site as a vote and in return give your site credit for each vote.

Bottom line. submit to big directorie first such as DMOZ, Joeant and other big directories.also submit your site to social bookmarking sites and news site(if you have a news blog) such as del.icio.us, reddit, Stumbleupon, Sphinn, technorati etc. Afterwards sit back and relax Google will come.
