Well, as of today it can be said yes. Google is in fact once again changing their search results? Why? Who the hell knows really. However, there are now two distinct search pages now being served through two different algorithms for the most part.

Let’s examine what happens when you do the traditional search now at Google.com.

You enter your search query as normal. Then what happens next is something a bit new. Google instead of doing the classic search they are now doing a new type. Before, you would see something like “http://www.google.com/search?q=”. This is something simple & easy to break down. You have the search function google takes you too, and the q= part actually is nothing more than your query. This of course is followed by session ID, client browser information, what page to start at.

However, now “http://www.google.com/#q=” is the new search function. Differences seem to be nothing more than perhaps contextual aspects of the search results. Sorta like what Google does with it’s local listings and the like. Context being the key with local listings. To get better information on that, well that will be a different post.

Sorry, for the quick post, but, more research is needed & wanted to start bringing back great information that is found here at Graphic SEO.

Here is a short list of a couple that Graphic SEO finds very useful.

Merchant Circle

Merchant circle is free and networking on it can be very useful if done properly. We have a listing on merchant Circle and have had about 4 leads come from them so far. You can visit us on merchant circle here. Graphic SEO on Merchant Circle

PR Web

Press releases are not for everyone but if pulled off correctly you can expect to see alot of traffic from it. Graphic SEO released a press release a few weeks back and the stats thus far have been 2,000 reads and around 450 click throughs. You may read our press release here. Graphic SEO on PR WEB.

Super Pages

It never hurts to have you company listed in the phone book and the cool part about super pages is that its free. We haven’t yet had any leads come from Supr Pages but it did provide a link back to us and like I said in the beginning. ITS FREE. check us out on super pages here. Graphic SEO on Super Pages

Hotfrog

Again this is another free link that if executed right, you will see a couple of visitors a week from hotfrog. Its quick and easy and in my opinion it is worth the 5 minutes it takes to fill in the information. check us out here. Graphic SEO at Hotfrog

Well that is a couple of links for the day. I will update soon with more listings. But for now I have to get back to work

Any SEO worth their salt checks on Google’s guidelines regularly to ensure they are keeping up with what is white hat, gray hat, black hat tactics. If you have noticed Google has now taken out the part about being listed in relevant directories such as DMOZ & has taken out the part about Yahoo! back links.. One, of these statements seems to hold more water than the other.

I must commend Google for no longer displaying DMOZ as a trusted site. Yes, it should be trusted, yes there are plenty of good people that maintain DMOZ directory, but, there are bad DMOZ editors too that require payment for inclusion. Good for Google to recognize this! However, with that said has the algorithm actually changed that much? NO! It hasn’t changed, merely the wording on the guidelines has changed. I think it is helpful for any company to get listed in DMOZ, but, has it ever been necessary? Great sites still get listed regardless if they are listed in DMOZ or not. That is the nature of the beast & once again proving content is king in Google’s search engine ranking algorithm.

Now, about the Yahoo! pay directory. I just think Google decided to take this down based on the fact they are moving to do ad based cooperation with Yahoo! nothing more. It was just one black mark they didn’t need for the inquiry into that deal being allowed. Thats it. Nothing more. Once, again has the algorithm actually placed any less significance on the directory, probably not.

As far as back links are concerned, well it still states pretty clear about how Google bot travels the web, its based on links. Once, again nothing has changed merely trying to get rid of the buying/sell market of links. But, that won’t change anything, unfortunately. No, even with conceptual search the algorithm has to get its context from a directory if its DMOZ or if its Yahoo! or Wikipedia.

So, in conclusion has anything actually changed? Nope, not a thing. The only thing that has changed is Google’s wordy for suggestions to webmasters. Thats it, pretty simple stuff.

Here is a post that will help the average SEO/SEM internet marketer out with tracking the rankings on Google via Google. The idea here is, why bother use some software that you have to pay money for if you can do it yourself easily & with no profit loss. It is a rather simple approach that I think will aid many, giving numbers with rankings in Google for keywords. First, we will look at using Google search functionality & what that incorporates. Finally, looking at how we can use Google to track search engine rankings, numbered results.

How I came to this problem

Well, its never been a problem because I’ve always thought of myself as a guru of search that learned from a master at the art. Well, it would be your job for finding this Guru on your own, its not hard & many all ready know this renowned searcher. It came to my attention that many SEO marketers & SEO companies will happily spend good money after a product simply due to their own laziness & inability to due the features that sorta product would offer. One, of those features would be tracking the moving of a company through the rankings on different keywords.

Using Google to track SEO

Well, wouldn’t it be nice to if Google would allow you to see a number along side those rankings, thus, you wouldn’t have to track through the top 100 rankings 10 rankings at a time? Well, what if I told you Google already has such a number system in place to help the SEO marketer, thus, you wouldn’t have to worry about buying a program with this sort of feature included.

First, lets look at a basic Google search query as it appears in your URL address bar. This will help us modify it so Google will show us what we want it to show us & nothing more.

Here are the results for a search query entered into Google’s main page for: “SEO Marketing“.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=SEO+Marketing&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

Pruning Your Search URL

OK this looks pretty simple. Search? is the basic function and it requires only one parameter to really get results, the other is some ‘fluff’. Can you guess what that parameter is? Thats right q= ..

http://www.google.com/search?q=SEO+Marketing

The “q=” part basically stands for query, or the question you are posing to Google search function.

That is it, nothing is else is required for a Google search & this will yield the top 10 results for that search query. Nothing, really special & I would hope it is something that all of you SEO masters and Guru’s would know. But, this is just the top 10, how can we get Google to display more than the top 10?

Getting more out of your search

Well, lets look at the top 10 search pages on one page. Thats is simple enough actually. Lets examine the search for the keyword: SEO Company

http://www.google.com/search?q=SEO+Company

The above is the basic query for SEO company. But, still only shows ten results at a time. Lets give it some more depth.

http://www.google.com/search?q=SEO+Company&num=100

Ahh, we’ve added two new parts to examine in the URL the function num and the ampersand(&). The ampersand allows us to call more sub-functions of the search function.. Thus, by adding the “num=100″ we’ve increased our results to the first 10 pages of Google’s 10 search result listings all on one page.

Let the SEO marketer examine this data

Well, thats pretty simple. All you have to do is do a find functionality of your browser of choice on the 1st page(which shows the top 10 pages all in one). Boom, there is the result if your search query comes back with the URL you are looking for you have an idea if that company is in the top 10 pages of Google in one fell swoop. But, that is not good enough is it? I mean you don’t know what rank they actually are unless you count down from the first result down to that company’s URL. That is tedious & where most SEO companies & SEO marketers would just turn to a program to do this for them, thus, wasting good money to provide a luxury. Rest assure I will save you that money & you can just send it to Graphic SEO LLC if you feel so inclined.

Lets get those numbered results

OK so you have an idea of how to check to see if a URL is in the top 10 pages of Google with the num=100 part of the search URL. That part is simple, getting it numbered took some digging. Well, its rather simple Google uses much more than the basic search? function. In fact Google uses a wide verity of search functions, some based on browsers, and that part is key for the discovery.

Well, Google too needs to heed to problematic browsers such as IE. IE’s pit falls come in handy to us for this aspect of the search. Google uses the same type for other browsers like Firefox’s Google search bar is rather easy to come across & anyone with or without Firefox can use this bar that is aimed at Firefox browsers.. I’m not saying one is better than the next, but, you will see a main difference.

http://www.google.com/firefox?

This will display firefox’s start page for Google. Its just like the regular search from Google’s main page. Nothing, spectacular that will aid us in getting numbered results. Its just like using Google’s search?.

http://www.google.com/ie?

http://www.google.com/ie?q=seo+company&num=100

That is a golden search term for those SEO guys that want to get numbered listings. It brings up IE’s “start page” for Google. But, this has its major draw backs, it lists Google results with a number. But, it doesn’t display any URL of the pages those links point to.

Thus, if we truly wanted to view what those pages are its rather simple. All you have to do is view the page’s source! Thus, we can now view what those hyperlinks actually point to & the methodology stays the same, just use the find feature to locate the URL of the site you are looking for!

Interpreting the data for the view Source

OK so you have the Google’s results it served for the keyword SEO Company.

Now, we access the find command for that window that has the source for the page in it. Simply, type in the URL you are looking for. Boom! You have the URL, now it is a simple matter of going backwards from that link to the title part of the url. That number located there will be the number that is associated with that keyword search! Its that simple.

ie.

<nobr>16. <a title

Internet Marketing

Graphic SEO will keep the promise of providing valid information as it pertains to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) & SEM (Search Engine Marketing). I think a few people on our blogs have had enough on topics of security for a little while, so its now time to focus once again on providing information on what we do best, internet marketing. The focus here will be a few things a marketer should keep in mind when targeting an international marketing campaign.

International Internet Marketing

While a domestic company will often times focus on its local/regional market a company that wishes to move into a foreign market has a lot to comprehend. Some of these questions may deal with “How is my product being viewed through the eyes of the culture I’m attempting to reach”, “How will I handle logistical problems?”. Maybe, the latter isn’t something an internet based business necessarily has to answer, in so much UPS is delivering the product. Just to restate a main point in internet sales, it is often a major pain for the foreign consumer to reach a site they can not view in their local language. Overall though, with an internet portal to your business the question of “How am I going to break into the international market” is already answered thanks to translation services & SEM / SEO. The only major concern would be is calculating a return on investment. However, when dealing with foreign markets, its best to hire someone with a firm understanding of the language.

Cultural Concerns in internet advertising

Every company who wants that international client should examine what country they really want go after. This can only be achieved through analysis of that country’s culture. Its important to note that when examining another culture that we must not over simplify, ergo, generalize the culture as a whole. That sounds simple enough, don’t stereotype a group of people. Thats not to say that some generalizations are not true. For example its safe to say in places like Saudi Arabia you wouldn’t want to market dog cheddar pork rinds for “Mans best friend”, they would be off limits.(It is illegal to bring pork products into the country & the Muslim faith sees the dog as a dirty animal) its just possible Pet Smart doesn’t sell a lot of dog toys to Muslim nations. Then again are there foreigners that reside in the country, thus, some people may be interested in pet dog products & thats not to say some Muslims don’t own a dog.

However, its just as safe to say giving away free crabs to everyone in Maryland in a marketing campaign will get every single Marylander to come to your store to buy your prodcut. While, a good amount of people enjoy crabs in Maryland & this tactic will probably work well… It does not address the individual in a society people have allergies & some people just do not enjoy Maryland crabs, while some have religious views that prevent them for partaking.

Rather, what we should examine about other cultures is something along the lines of the following

Learned: How the youth are educated in terms of culture. For example, in Western society we teach our children that is great to be competitive in other cultures this trait may discouraged.

Shared: These are the traits that are shared by most if not all of the society making these traits truly unique to the culture itself.

compulsory: These are aspects of culture that will give either negative or positive feedback in order for that particular social trait to hold some importance in the society.

These simple definitions should be good enough to learn a little bit more about generalizations & how they can benefit you to some degree of success. That is not to say a marketer shouldn’t be wary of over generalizing.

Other cultural observances

When looking at a culture one thing that should be noted is the following:

Beliefs: What a geographical group of people hold dear to them. In America we often think hard work pays off than leads into success. In a more mico-culture like IT(information Technology) a lot of US workers believe its ‘who you know’ that pays off more often than not.

Values: These are often traits that can be described like individualism, group cohesivness.

Goals: What the culture is trying to achieve. Is the culture making laws & products that keep them in a more traditional roles or is the culture striving for progressive thinking & attitudes even only at a slower rate.

Attitudes: these will change from society to society. These are the traits of beliefs, feelings & behavioral intentions. If your selling the luxury product to a lower rung of cultural ladder as the higher class, maybe you should examine if you should be doing that in that particular culture. Sure, money is money, but, these are things you may have to change when approaching an international client.

Those are the basics

I’m sure this material is some what of a redo of any marketing class, but, for those that don’t know now do. These are just basic things to consider before launching a international seo campaign. I for one am glad you choose Graphic SEO for your marketing news & research. Remember, we take all of these points into consideration before launching any targeted marketing campaign, so if you don’t want to have to sweat the details, let us.

Well, by now you probably presume I’m freaking nuts & or dangerous, or an idiot; possibly all three. Well, thats fine. I will now go on to defending hacking of Hadron Collider. It won’t be a long post, but, hopefully just amusing. Who knows you may just change your views once you get done reading.

Hadron Collider was hacked, for those unaware, I will briefly explain how they got passed security. It was rather simple, exploiting the number one weakness of the network, the human element. Although, the hackers claimed to have found an open-publicly facing website. I think their was much more involved in stealing the credentials, rather than, simple SQL-injection, weak password/user name combo. Then, again maybe it was just that easy. Basically, a large amount of emails went out, that either A)where Phishing B)Concealed malicious code C) Maybe a combination. The team has yet to state how the breach occurred, at least none of the minimal research I’ve done really turned over anything; other than what is found in the news. The only reason I say it was the human element is because, its the easiest route to take, with the minimal amount of effort involved. Sure, they had to get tons of email address, they had to probably spoof tons of headers, all & all it was a lot of public information, that lends itself to full automation.. Maybe, they actually breached the network of the American team (presumably stolen credentials came from an American team with a smaller particle smasher, that could view the results of the ‘Big Bang’ it was going to make.). Maybe, they fire-walked their way to SAM to crack open. I don’t know, but, if it had been the latter, I think red flags would have been raised & the hack unsuccessful to the degree they got in.
Now, did they do the unethical, breaking of their local laws & international laws.. Yes, I’m sure they will face some sort of repercussion for their actions. If I may just get romantic here for a moment. Is it possible that a breach has already happened? Root-kits been placed before this attack? Maybe, some loan hacker or group is just trying to catch a glimpse of what is really happening, see particles smash like never before, maybe they are an amature black-hole physicist. Besides, the implications of him/her not supposed to be their, what they are doing is in fact illegal, is that not more noble than the team that actually did hack it?

I just wanted to throw that idea out there I suppose because, well, I wanted to write something. Don’t worry the next post will actually concern marketing, so if you’ve been coming to this blog for that reason.. I will be releasing some wonderful post here in the future & thank you for your patronage. We look forward to bring you the best damn marketing information, news, etc on the web!

Well, the rumor that won’t die has a name. Its called Chrome or Google’s browser. I won’t believe it until I see it, rather, this seems like more FUD at this point(for linux). A few other articles speculate a few things about Google’s tabs & running those pages in a ’sandbox’ mode, a mode that is ’safe’. I will speculate on this sandbox mode & the great thing about Chrome.

First, comes Google’s sandbox tabs. Well, there is a bit of interest here with tabs themselves being able to run independently from another tab. If that tab crashes, then, the browser itself is fine and just that one tab is effected. Now, my question really is how safe can this new browser be? I mean first they are beta testing it on Windows. The program itself will be using different APIs from the Windows system, that I’m sure once reviewed will show gaping security flaws because I’m sure it will be using an undocumented API a few times, the browser may be hooking itself onto other processes in an unexpected way.. I just see a whole slew of problems coming from the Windows beta. Which leads right into the next paragraph…..

The Great thing about Chrome

For all the problems that will be found their will come patches. Why? Because this is an open source project, anyone can download the source and peer review this code. Any cracker can download this source code, look it over, find an issue & have the next Storm worm running.. See the issue with open source on windows is just that.. I’m disappointed that Google released an Open Source Project first on a closed system with out doing both Windows & Vanilla Linux at the same time. I mean all Google has to do for the later is release some source code & have a hungry, egger community finish what they have started. I’m sure the Google browser would find such a community.

Conclusion

I guess over all I’m just bummed that Google would decide really launch a browser, an open source browser first on a closed system. They have chosen not to wait for the open source browser on the open source system to do a dual launch. I mean all in all if they would have launched first in the Open Source community waited a while for a Windows launch the marketing would have gone pretty much the same. Their would still be the tremendous amount of buzz coming from every blog, and TV news network(Possibly a slight loss, I’m willing to concede). I guess I’m not in waiting for source code I can’t wait to get my hands on and play with. I hope all the hackers out their have fun with Chrome & I’m sure we will see some exciting plugins come in the future.
